Yule Song Collection From Around The Web

Yule is coming soon and who doesn’t enjoy a little singing around the fire as we sip our eggnog and munch on candy canes while images of sugarplum fairies dance through our peripheral vision. Or, am I the only one seeing those? Oops, a little too much eggnog perhaps. 😉

Keep the Yule in Yuletide!
Keep the Yule in Yuletide!

Join us in a song of Praise to help Him on His way.
The Sun returns, the Sun returns, the Sun returns today
Join us in a song of Praise to help Him on His way.

“Yule Fires”
Tune: “Greensleeves” Words by John G. MacKinnon

In ancient days the folk of old
When chilled with fright by winter’s cold
Did kindle up a great Yule fire
With leaping flames in its great pyre;
So to entice the waning sun
To rise again and wider run;
It’s fiery course across the sky,
To warm them so they would not die.
So we, whose minds now sense a chill
Of anger in the evil will,
The human conflict, hate, and strife,
Which hold a menace over life;
Would kindle up a flame of love
That we within our hearts may move,
In Yuletide joy, with love embrace
And thus abide in peace and grace.

GODDESS BLESS YE MERRY WITCHES
Sung to the tune of God Bless Ye Merry Gentleman, Re-crafted by Rowan Morgana

Goddess Bless ye merry witches, let nothing you dismay,
Remember that the Sun God is born on Solstice Day
To Turn the Wheel towards the Sun with warming solar rays
Refrain
O tidings of summer and joy, summer and joy;
O tidings of summer and joy.

In the Eastern Quarter, the Child of Light is born,
A tiny flame of sunlight grows stronger every morn;
The Goddess of the Moon and Stars throws back her cloak well worn
Refrain
“Fear not, then,” said the Goddess “Let nothing you afright
This day is born a Sun of a pure and golden light,
To turn the Wheel of time away from Winter’s power and might.”
Refrain
Sing praises to the Sun God all you within this place,
With perfect love and perfect trust each other now embrace;
This Blessed Yuletide miracle of Divine Grace.
Refrain
Goddess Bless the Child of Light, may he proudly reign,
Until at Summer Solstice his light begins to wane
Among your friends and kindred that live both far and near—
Refrain

WICCAN AMAZING GRACE
Margot Adler

Amazing grace, how sweet the earth
that formed a witch like me
I once was burned, but now I thrive
Was hanged but now I sing.
Twas grace that drew down the moon
and Grace that raised the sea
The Magick of the people’s will
Will set our Mother free!
Amazing grace, how sweet the earth
that saved a witch like me
I once was burned, but now I thrive,
Was hanged but now I sing!

“Ye Children All of Mother Earth”
(words by Ellen Reed,
Tune: “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear”)

Ye children all of Mother Earth
join hands and circle around
To celebrate the Solstice night
When our lost Lord is found.
Rejoice, the year has begun again
The Sun blesses skies up above
So share the season together now
In everlasting Love!

(Yule Version) WHAT CHILD IS THIS?
Words by Anie Burke-Webb, Tune: Greensleeves/What Child Is This

What child is this, who rises now
from His Mother’s womb returning
Her children greet most joyously
the sight of His face’s bright burning
Chorus:
This, this is the Sun child born
The radiant one, the light returned
Born unto the world again
This child, the promise of summer
His growing light returns the warmth
that darkness stole from out the Earth
To bud the leaves, and blossoms bring
to signal the Spring’s rebirth
Chorus

“We Wish You a Merry Solstice”
We wish you a merry Solstice
We wish you a merry Solstice
We wish you a merry Solstice
And a happy New Year!
Chorus:
Good tidings we bring
To you and your kin
We wish you a merry Solstice!
And a happy New Year!
Our feasting is not so simple
Our feasting is not so simple
Our feasting is not so simple
On this Hollyday!
We’ve eggnog and punch and wassail
We’ve eggnog and punch and wassail
We’ve eggnog and punch and wassail
And hot chocolate too
We’ve breads, cakes and Solstice cookies
We’ve breads, cakes and Solstice cookies
We’ve breads, cakes and Solstice cookies
Plus crackers and buns
Now bring us some figgy pudding
Now bring us some figgy pudding
Now bring us some figgy pudding
And bring it right now
We won’t go until we get some
We won’t go until we get some
We won’t go until we get some
So bring some right now

We Three Kings
Original words by George F. Handel, 1742, (Yule Version) by Maria Kay Sims, Circle of the Cosmic Muse

We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star
Chorus:
O star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guides us to the perfect light
Born a king at sunrise so bright
Gold I bring to honor the light
King forever, ceasing never
Light is reborn this night
Frankincense to offer have I
Scent of praise for birth that is night
Joy and praising, all now raising
Worship the God most high.
Myrrh is mine, the incense of night
Gone is he away from our sight
Yet in sorrow, know tomorrow
Surely will bring new light
Glorious now behold him arise
King and God and sacrifice
Alleluia, alleluia
Earth to the heav’ns replies

“We Three Crones”
Words by “Heartsong”, Tune: We Three Kings)

We three crones of magic-past are,
Bearing gifts, we traverse afar,
Fields, fountain, moor & mountain,
Following each our star.
Oh, star of wonder, star of might,
Star of radiant beauty bright,
Inward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us with thy magick light.
Gold I bring, the Earth’s hidden gleam,
Guards our Mem’ry, draws forth our dream;
Weary-curing, strong enduring,
Holding time’s circling stream.
Frankincense I carry with me.
Incense aids the spirit to see;
Analyzing, wize, up-rising,
Sense of the Earth, flow free!
Myrrh is mine, it’s bitter perfume
Lifts new life, a magical broom;
Praying, flying, purifying,
Away with old lingering gloom.
Glorious gifts of magic (wimmin) we praise,
Maiden, Mother, Ancient of Days;
Strength, and sense, and energy; whence
Return to our sacred ways.

Triple Solstice Goddess
Words by Lunaea Weatherstone, Tune: We Three Kings

Goddesses of the Solstice are we
Bringers of the Star and the Tree
Maiden, Mother, Crone uncover
Winter’s deep mystery
Chorus:
Oh, time of wisdom, time of light
Time of Winter’s darkest night
Goddess hold me, Love enfold me
Open me to Your light
Maiden of the darkness, I sing
Underworlds of wisdom, I bring
Seeking, learning, Kore returning
Bearing the light of Spring
Demeter, the slumbering Earth
Dreaming of the Daughter’s rebirth
Candles lighted, world united
Knowing our own true worth
Crone of deepest wisdom, I dwell
Deep in Time’s mysterious well
Dreaming, daring, teaching, sharing
Hecate’s secret spell

Silver Moon
to the tune of “Silver Bells”

City witches, busy witches, dressed in festival style
In the air there’s a feeling of ritual.
Women laughing, Circle passing
Sharing smile after smile,
And ’round every hearth fire you hear:
Silver moon, Mother moon,
It’s Goddess time in the city.
Circling, hear them sing,
Soon it will be Solstice Day.
Strings of candles, held by handle
With a flickering glow,
As the witches weave magickal treasures.
Touching changing, changing touching,
This is Diana’s scene,
And with all of the blessings you hear: (etc.)

(Yule Version) Silver Bells
Words adapted by Hilda Marshall Tune: “Silver Bells”,

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style
In the air there’s a feeling of giving
Children laughing, people passing
Meeting smile after smile
And on every street corner you hear…
Silver bells, silver bells
Yuletide returns to the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Chiming the winter away
Strings of street lights, even stoplights
Blink a bright red and green
As the shoppers rush home with their treasures
Hear the snow crunch, see the kids bunch
Eyes as bright as their dreams
And on every street corner you hear
Silver bells, silver bells
Yuletide returns to the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Chiming the winter away

(Yule Version) Silent Night
words adapted by Karen Deal Robinson, Tune: “Silent Night”

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright.
Starlight gleams upon the snow.
In our hands the candles glow,
As we sing of peace.
As we sing of peace.
Silent night, holy night,
We will share love’s pure light.
Radiant beams from every face
Tell our dreams for every place.
Hope again is born,
Hope again is born.

(Yule Version) Silent Night 2
words by Ellen Reed

Silent night, Solstice Night
All is calm, all is bright
Nature slumbers in forest and glen
Till in Springtime She wakens again
Sleeping spirits grow strong!
Sleeping spirits grow strong!
Silent night, Solstice night
Silver moon shining bright
Snowfall blankets the slumbering Earth
Yule fires welcome the Sun’s rebirth
Hark, the Light is reborn!
Hark, the Light is reborn!
Silent night, Solstice night
Quiet rest till the Light
Turning ever the rolling Wheel
Brings the Winter to comfort and heal
Rest your spirit in peace!
Rest your spirit in peace!

(Yule Version)  Share The Light
Words by Ellen Reed, Tune: The First Noel

On this Winter holiday, let us stop and recall
That this season is holy to one and to all.
Unto some a Son is born, unto us comes a Sun,
And we know, if they don’t that all paths are one.
Chorus:
Share the light, share the light!
Share the light, share the Light!
All paths are one on this holy night!
Be it Chanukah or Yule,
Christmas time or Solstice night,
All celebrate the eternal light.
Lighted tree or burning log,
Or eight candle flames.
All gods are one god, whatever their names.

Our Lady Greensleeves II
(Yule Version)

The winter moon is shining bright
The yuletide log is burning
Good people gather and tonight
the sabbat wheel is turning
Joy, Mirth, the Sun’s rebirth
Noels of old we greet thee
Life’s ring is the song we sing
of praises of the Lady
T’was at the feast of bright beltain
when we all were a maying
Sweet minstrel, pleated her gown of grains
Spring round the lady was playing
And though now robed in snow
Her wintery garb deceives
For bedecked with holly and mistletoe
She is still our Lady Greensleeves
So drink thee wassail everyone
Good pagans all make merry
With wine as red as the reborn sun
As red as Holly berry
Dance, sing, come join the ring
As the yuletide’s boughs she weaves
Fair Queen, the evergreen,
Sweet lovely Lady Greensleeves

O Yuletide Tree

O Yuletide Tree, O Yuletide tree
How lovely are thy branches
O Yuletide tree, O Yuletide tree
How lovely are thy branches
The thought of you as Yule draws near
Brings joyful tidings of great cheer
O Yuletide tree, O Yuletide tree
To us you are so lovely
Oh Yuletide tree, O Yuletide tree
Evergreen and fragrant
O Yuletide tree, O Yuletide tree
Evergreen and fragrant
We bring you in our home to be
A sign of life’s eternity.
O Yuletide tree, O Yuletide tree
Forever green and lovely.
O Yuletide tree, O Yuletide tree
We thank you for your blessings
O Yuletide tree, O Yuletide tree
We thank you for you blessings
With golden start and twinkling light
You cheer us on this holy night
O Yuletide tree, O Yuletide tree
Thou art most fair and lovely.

(Yule Version) Oh Holy Night

Oh holy night
the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the sun’s rebirth
Long lay the land, in cold of winter pining
Till he appears to shine warmth on the Earth
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
As yonder breaks the new and glorious dawn
Sing now with Joy
Oh sing in celebration
Oh night divine
Oh night, of holy birth
Oh night, divine
Oh night Oh night divine
Moon up above
We gather in your soft light
And wait for him, son of light to appear
Orb of our mother
Who holds us in her keeping
Send us your child
To bring warmth to our souls
The winter is cold, the nights are long in darkness
We long for the spring , the hope that now begins
Sing now with Joy
Oh sing in celebration
Oh night divine
Oh night, of holy birth
Oh night, divine
Oh night Oh night divine

(Yule Version) Oh Holy Night II
Words by Shekhinah Mountainwater

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining.
It is the night of the Sun God’s rebirth
Long lay the world, in cold and darkness pining.
`Til He appeared, and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices.
For yonder breaks, a new and glorious morn.
Rise from your knees! Oh hear the Pagan’s voices!
Oh night divine. Oh night when light was born.
Oh night divine. Oh night divine.
[Variations]
Oh holy night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the Goddess’s birth
Long lay the world in patriarchy pining
Til She appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn
Rise from your knees! Oh hear the women’s voices!
Oh night divine, Oh night when Light is born
Oh night divine, Oh night, Oh night divine.

Lady Moon Shine Softly
Tune: “O Little Town of Bethlehem”)

Lady moon shines softly down
To light the Earth below
As we, her children, gather here
Around the Yule fire’s glow
We wait for morning’s dawning
First light of holy birth
Our Lady turns the wheel of life
Her Son returns to Earth
With joy we’ll greet his dawning
A new year has begun
With increased light is bright new hope
Reborn in Everyone.

As we, our (wimmin) pow’r employ!
O, field & flood, rock, hill, & plain,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

The glories of our carefulness,
And wonders of our love,
And wonders of our love,
And wonders, wonders, of our love.

Joy to the World 3

Joy to the world, the new year´s come.
Now earth prepares for spring.
Let every hearth with firelight bloom,

And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.
Joy to the earth, now gladness reigns,
And birds their songs employ,
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
No more will cold and darkness grow,
Though frost still coats the ground.
We wait to hear the rivers flow
As far as hope is found,
As far as hope is found,
As far, as far as hope is found.
She heals the earth with truth and grace,
And asks us all to prove
The glories of Her righteousness
And wonders of Her love,

And wonders, and wonders of Her love.

I HAD A LITTLE GODDESS
to the tune of “The Dreidle Song” Author and Source Unknown

I had a little Goddess, I baked her out of clay.
I placed her on the altar and prepared myself to pray.
Spinning, dancing, leaping, Her laughter full of light,
Turning spiral, weaving, the Goddess is alive.
I made an invocation, invited her to stay,
And when I lit Her candle, she jumped up to play.
Her eyes began to twinkle, her lips curved in a smile,
She raised her arms above her head and danced a little while.
The stars came to my doorstep and spun about the room.
The Goddess, she went flying upon her magic broom.
My eyes were big as scrying globes, my heart pounded like a drum.
Night seeped through the windows and day came with a sun.
I thought she’d be so serious, I thought she’d be austere,
But when I met the Goddess, I knew I needn’t fear.
She danced upon my heartstrings, she opened up my eyes,
She made me see inside myself, the joy of life to prize.
Spiral, spiral, spiral, the Goddess is alive.
Turning, turning, turning, she danced a little jive.

THE HOLLY AND THE IVY III
adapted by Susan M. Shaw

The holly and the ivy
When they are both full grown
Of all the trees that are in the wood
The holly bears the crown
The rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry tunes
As we Pagans sing with cheer
The holly bears a blossom
White as the lily flower
The Goddess shares the Solstice Sun
Days grow longer with its power
The rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
We celebrate with joyous hearts
The Wheel of the Year
The holly bears a berry
As red as any blood
The Goddess brings the Solstice Sun
To allow our hopes to bud
The rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
These blessed signs of life’s renewal
Will banish any fear
The holly bears a prickle
As sharp as any thorn
The Goddess lights the Solstice Sun
As we welcome the new morn
The rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The Green Man and the Holly King
Are always welcome here
The holly bears a bark
As bitter as any gall
The Goddess gives the Solstice Sun
For the wonder of us all
The rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
In perfect love and perfect trust
May our hearts be ever clear
The holly and the ivy
When they are both full grown
Of all the trees that are in the wood
The holly bears the crown
The rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry tunes
As we Pagans sing with cheer

Hello Magic My Old Friend
Tune: The Sounds of Silence, Words by Ottercat

Hello magic my old friend
I’ve come to practice you again
Because the seasons softly creeping
It’s yuletide that I’m now keeping
And the seasons follow in their wondrous way
All remains
Within the wheel of the year
Out of circle I walk alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
Met the halo of the full moon
Hadn’t thought that it did come so soon
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a falling star
Come from afar
To touch the wheel of the year
And in my third eye then I saw
Ten thousand people maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing spells that voices never shared
No one dared
Invoke the pow’r of magic
“Fools” said I “you do not know
Mundanes like a cancer grow
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words like silent teardrops fell
And echoed in the wheel of the year
And the people bowed and prayed
To the patriarch they made
Nature called out her warning
In the weather she was forming
And the people polluted the rivers
the valleys even air they breath
Would no one believe
What’s whispered by the wheel of the year

“Have Yourself a Merry Little Yuletide”
Words by Hilda Marshall, Tune: “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”

Have yourself a merry little Yuletide
Let your heart be light
From now on our troubles will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry little Yuletide
Make the Sabbat gay
From now on our troubles will be miles away
Here we are as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more
Through the years we all will be together
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough
And have yourself a merry little Yuletide now

Hark the Neo-Pagans Sing
Words by “Sunblade”, Tune: Hark the Herald Angels Sing

Hark the Neo-Pagans sing,
Glory to the Holly King!
Peace on Earth and mercy mild,
God and Goddess reconciled,
Hear us now as we proclaim,
We have risen from the flames,
Our ancient Craft now we reclaim,
In the God and Goddess’ names
Hark the Neo-Pagans sing,
Glory to the Holly King!
Herne by highest love adored,
Herne the ever-reborn Lord,
At all times behold Him come,
Offspring of the Holy One,
Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see,
Hail incarnate Deity!
Our ancient Craft we now reclaim,
in the God and Goddess’ names
Hark the Neo-Pagans sing,
Glory to the Holly King!

(Yule Version) Go Tell It On The Mountain
Author Unknown

While witches kept their watching
O’er sleeping flock by night,
Behold, throughout the night sky,
There shone a magic light.
Go tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere.
Go tell it on the mountain,
The Solstice sun is born.
The witches danced and feasted,
When lo, there was rebirth.
The sunbeams climbed the mountains
And poured across the earth.
Down in a lowly valley,
The sun rays lit the morn,
And life began a-stirring
To sing this solstice song.

“Good Morrow, Happy Paganfolk”
To the tune of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”, words by William Baldwin

Good morrow, happy paganfolk,
On this great day of Yule.
And may ye brightly celebrate
And sing and dance and fool.
And deeply drain the wine of life
From Heaven’s glistening pool.
O partake of the ecstasy and joy,
Laughter and joy,
O partake of the ecstasy and joy.
The good and gracious Lady,
Her only law is love,
To cherish every living thing
Below us and above,
She reigneth as She did of old
The Queen of Heaven above.
O partake of the ecstasy and joy,
Laughter and joy,
O partake of the ecstasy and joy.
The great and mighty Horned One
Whose trident some do see,
Destroys and builds the world anew
From Birth and Death and Thee!
He leads us through illusion
To the everliving tree.
O partake of the ecstasy and joy,
Laughter and joy,
O partake of the ecstasy and joy.
Now may the GODS and GODDESSES
Bestow on us the grace,
To ever walk in balance with
The Spirits of the place.
And lead us all to Paradise
To greet them face to face.
O partake of the ecstasy and joy,
Laughter and joy,
O partake of the ecstasy and joy.

Gods Rest Ye Merry Paganfolk
Tune: “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen”

Gods rest ye merry pagan folk
Let none of you dismay.
Remember that the Sun returns
Upon this Solstice Day
The growing dark is ended now
And spring is on its way
Oh tidings of comfort and Joy
Comfort and Joy
Oh tidings of comfort and Joy
The winter’s worst still lies ahead
Fierce Tempest Snow and Rain
Beneath the blanket on the ground
The Spark of life remains
The Sun’s warm rays caress the seeds
To raise Life’s song again
Oh tidings of comfort and Joy
Comfort and Joy
Oh tidings of comfort and Joy
Within the blessed apple lies
The promise of the Queen
For from this pentacle shall rise
The orchards fresh and green
The Earth shall blossom once again
The air be sweet and clean
Oh tidings of comfort and Joy
Comfort and Joy
Oh tidings of comfort and Joy

Gods Bless Ye Merry Paganfolk
Words by Anie Burke-Webb, Tune: “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen”

Gods bless ye merry, Paganfolk
Let nothing you afright
There’s naught but peace will touch us here
On this the longest night
For our Great Mother will give birth
And turn the dark to light
(Chorus:)
And the Wheel’s turning round and round
Round and round.
And the Wheel’s turning round and round.
Into the west’s fast dimming light
The Dark God must retreat
As all of life must come at last
To death the longest sleep
But our Great Mother then gives birth
The circle is complete
(Chorus)
At morning’s first bright ray of light
Arrives the Sun Child’s birth
Returning through the Mother’s womb
Life promised to the Earth
Now that our Mother’s labor’s done
Rejoice with song and mirth

GOD REST YE MERRY, PAGANFOLK
Tune: God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, words by Ellen Reed

God rest ye merry, paganfolk,
Let nothing you dismay.
Remember that the Sun returns
Upon this Solstice day.
The growing dark is ending now
And Spring is on its way.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy!
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.
The Goddess rest ye merry, too,
And keep you safe from harm.
Remember that we live within
The circle of Her arms,
And may Her love give years to come
A very special charm.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy!
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy!

“Glory to the New Born King”
Tune: Hark the Herald, Angels Sing

Brothers, sisters, come and sing
Glory to the new-born King!
Gardens peaceful, forests wild
Celebrate the Winter Child!
Now the time of glowing starts!
Joyful hands and joyful hearts!
Cheer the Yule log as it burns!
Once again, the Sun returns
Brothers, sisters, come and sing!
Glory to the new-born King!
Brothers, sisters, singing come
Glory to the newborn Sun
Through the wind and dark of night
Celebrate the coming light!
Suns glad rays through fear’s cold burns,
Life through Death the Wheel now turns!
Gather round Yule log and tree
Celebrate Life’s mystery
round the Yule fire
brothers, sisters, singing come
Glory to the new-born Sun.

“Deck the Halls”
Traditional carol

Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Fa la la la la la la la la
Tis the season to be jolly
Fa la la la la la la la la
Don we now our gay apparel
Fa la la la la la la la la
Troll the ancient Yuletide carols
Fa la la la la la la la la
See the blazing Yule before us
Fa la la la la la la la la
Strike the harp and join the chorus
Fa la la la la la la la la
Follow me in merry measure
Fa la la la la la la la la
While I tell of Yuletide treasure
Fa la la la la la la la la
Fast away the old year passes
Fa la la la la la la la la
Hail the new, ye lads and lasses
Fa la la la la la la la la
Sing we joyous all together
Fa la la la la la la la la
Heedless of the wind and weather

Dancing in a Wiccan Wonderland
Words by Alexander & Aarcher, Tune: Winter Wonderland

Pagans sing, are you listenin’,
Altar’s set, candles glisten,
It’s a Magickal night, we’re having tonight,
Dancing in a Wiccan Wonderland
Chorus:
In a Circle we can light a Yule Fire,
And await the rising of the Sun,
It’s the Great Wheel turning for the new year,
loaded with abundance and great fun.
Blades held high, censer smoking,
God and Goddess, we’re invoking,
Through Elements Five, we celebrate life,
Dancing in a Wiccan Wonderland,
Queen of Heaven, is in Her place,
Triple Goddess, now the Crone Face,
Above and Below, She’s the Goddess we know,
Dancing in a Wiccan Wonderland
Now the God, is the Provider,
Supplying game for our Fire,
Above and Below, He’s the Horned One we Know,
Dancing in a Wiccan Wonderland
Later on, by the fire,
Cone of Power, gettin’ higher
It’s a Magickal Night we’re having tonight,
Dancing in a Wiccan Wonderland

“Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire”
Words by Robert Wells, (Yule Version) by Susan M. Shaw, music by Mel Torme

Chestnuts Roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all a glow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight
They know that Santa’s on his way
He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And ev’ry mother’s child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly
And so I’m offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it’s been said many times, many ways
“Merry Yuletide to you!”

Away from the Harvest
Tune: “Away In A Manger”, words adapted by Blake TaylorMixon

Away from the harvest the seasons have turned
The nights have grown colder and fires we’ve burned
The stars in the heavens look down where we stand
Neighbors and friends with candles in hand.
The warmth is returning, the sun and the light
Will brighten our days and shorten our nights
Come gather around the Solstice is here
The old one is passing, begins the new year.

All Hail Ye, Simple Pagans
Tune: “Oh Come, All Ye Faithful”, Author Unknown

All hail ye, simple pagans
Gather round the Yule fire
Oh come ye Oh come ye
To call the Sun!
Fires within us
Call the fire above us
Oh come let us adore him!
Oh come let us adore him!
Oh come let us adore him!
Our Lord, the Sun!
Yea Lord, we greet thee
Born again at Yuletide!
Yule fires and candle flames
Are lighted for you!
Come to thy children
Calling for thy blessing!
Oh come let us adore him!
Oh come let us adore him!
Oh come let us adore him!
Our Lord, the Sun

Daily Roundup – Drum Jams and Flim Flams

Preparing to drum.
Preparing to drum.

I ended up not having to work overtime last night so I decided to throw together an impromptu drum circle for myself and anyone else who happened to show up. The weather was nice and the vibe was right so why not right?

From behind the drum.
From behind the drum.

After dark, the view from behind the drum looked something like this. May you dance, drum and sing to the rhythm of your heart and spirit. May your ancestors join you in celebration and may you always have tribe to join you by the fire. If not, may you find peace in being a tribe of one. When folks show up we usually have an assortment of doumbeks, djembes, tablas, tom-toms, bongos and more. Also, there are folks who join in with guitars, flutes, even an occasional didgeridoo. A nice drum circle is a great way to end the week and let off some steam. Dancers swaying to the rhythm, a crackling fire and good company make for a wonderful Friday night after a long week at work. Better than reality show silliness or the typical clubbing scene in my not so humble opinion. Touch base with your inner tribal being. Find a drum circle going on near you. Here’s a place to start your search.

Or, if you’re local to the Arlington, Texas area you’re welcome to come hang out with us sometime. Just give me a shout and I’ll add you to the invite list. Also, Deep Woods Apothecary, Cosmic Crow Collective and First Jefferson UU Church tend to have fairly frequent drumming events in our area. I get invites on FB once in awhile and try to share them to my timeline to help spread the word, spread the vibe and spread the love. Keep the rhythm going ya’ll!

For a short time there existed in Grand Prairie, a place where people who follow the old ways could gather and commune with one another. But, alas, it did not last. Another victim of divisiveness and apathy. Maybe someday we will learn to love one another and our gods.

I never got to make it to nearly as many of these drumming events as I wished I could and now they are gone. Deeply missed ya’ll! Sad that so many showed up for the party but didn’t shop enough to keep the store open.

Music is a powerful thing: It can raise our spirits, carry us through athletic challenges, and make us weep. Its very fabric is a source of power and intrigue, too, since just a measly few tones might do anything from shatter glass to manifest the Devil’s Tritone.

Also called the Devil’s Triad, the Devil’s Interval, and diabolus in musica, this combination of tones has led to some of the most chilling chords and melodies in music history, from classical compositions to heavy metal riffs, and even has a reputation for being banned by religious authority in centuries past. As much as it’s inspired composers to explore the dark side in music, however, the Devil’s Tritone—a.k.a. the diminished fifth—also has a stirring effect on audiences for some very technical reasons (no black magic required).

Daily Roundup – Musical Adventures And Euclid

Musical accompaniment is an enhancement to nearly every aspect of our lives. Working, playing, relaxing, driving or even during meditation. Music always seems to make whatever we are doing even better.

We’ve done some exploration on the purported benefits of 432 Hz tuning a few times. We found that while we enjoyed the overall tonal qualities of that tuning there wasn’t much of a perceptible difference in spiritual energies. We may do some more experiments though. We’re not done with the subject by any means.

Some of the claims made regarding this musical tonality are that it is the natural frequency of the universe with cosmic healing powers and  the ability to attract masses of audience members to our music. A bit far fetched to be sure but oftentimes where there is smoke there is fire so we haven’t completely ruled out the possibility that there might be something there worth looking in to.

Here's looking at Euclid.
Here’s looking at Euclid.

Euclid of Alexandria was a Greek mathematician who is often referred to as the “father of geometry”. Mathematics and musical intervals have a long and interesting history as both scientific and artistic pursuits. Mathematics is truly the language of the universe and a fascinating field of study from many angles.

Arabic sources attribute several works on mechanics to Euclid. Yet, interestingly enough not many original references to Euclid have survived to modern times. As a result, very little is known about his life. The date, place and circumstances of both his birth and death are completely unknown and have only been estimated roughly relative to other people mentioned with him. He is rarely mentioned by name by other Greek mathematicians at all.

Daily Roundup – Musicians Edition

Musicians are truly magicians weaving words and notes into spells which can alter our moods, inspire us or bring us down. Sometimes they call our attention to things going on in the world or things that have already happened. Sometimes they just give us something to dance to and enjoy life with.

Oh, Jack do you never sleep, does the green still run deep in your heart?
Or will the changing times, motorways, power lines keep us apart?

Well, I don’t think so. I saw some grass growing through the pavement today.

Omnia – Freedom Song from their new album ‘Prayer’. I bought my copy on Amazon yesterday and have been jamming on it ever since. A lot of great tunes once again from a great band of phenomenal musicians!

Another album I bought recently although it’s been out since 2010 is Sully Erna from Godsmack’s album Avalon. Also a great set of tunes by a tremendous musician that I don’t know how I missed hearing of before. My newly rediscovered love of exploring Pagan Music and as a result adding content to Paganesque Radio on both Pandora and Spotify has helped me discover a lot of great stuff. Give it a listen!

A Random Playlist Of Music I Love

A playlist of random things I’ve been listening to lately and a bit of local music news…

I won’t run this human race, your war is not for me
I hear the voices from the wild, they taught me how to see
It’s us who are the strangers here and we don’t own the land
My words they fall upon deaf ears, cause no-one understands

Om Namah Shivaya is one of the most beloved and ancient Hindu mantras. It comes from part of a Hindu prayer, the Shri Rudram Chamakam, which is found in the second oldest of the vedic texts, the Yajurveda. It is a hymn to Shiva, the deity of destruction and transformation, and it is said that chanting this mantra helps to get rid of internal imperfections, limitations, and sins. It is also a mantra that elevates the psyche and awakens higher states of consciousness.

You might be wondering why a retail store would be our venue of the month. Well, let me tell you why. Have you ever been there? If you have then you might know. It’s a wonderful vintage retail store catering to a little bit of everything. You can find cool clothes and jewelry, arts and homemade gifts plus local vendors like Billyz Beanz Coffee and Beardos Beard oil and Balm. But, we will focus on all the live music they have there.

When you first walk in you’ll notice guitars, bongo drums and now a piano just inside with a small area to perform. It’s always open mic at the crow. Whether you want to come in and play a few songs or keep yourself busy while your other half is shopping(It’s a lot better than pacing the aisles). But, I’m sure you will want to look around the store before you play. Tammie Carson, the shop owner is also a musician. Check out her band, the Bad Escape Band.
Virtually every Saturday afternoon she will have somebody playing on the patio to entertain her and Division Brewing customers or bring your own instrument to play there on Thirsty Thursdays from 4 to 9pm every evening. Throw in an intimate concert on the inside once in a while on a Friday night and you will see why she’s our venue of the month.
Please “LIKE” them on Facebook or check out her web site at http://www.cosmiccrowcollective.com/

Would you consider adding some of these to your playlist? Have some suggestions or a playlist of your own? Use that handy dandy comment feature and share your ideas!

Behold the awesomeness that is this! Sales of The Green Album (I bought my copy. Did you buy yours?), which debuted at Caldera Fest this past May have saved 1,817 acres of rainforest at the Balanga Forest Reserve in the Congo. Let’s all keep doing our part to save pieces of this planet for nature to thrive so future generations from whom we borrow this land can have an opportunity to enjoy unspoiled spaces.

Medicinal Bourbon - Local Band
Medicinal Bourbon

So, today my friend Jim Sutter of Medicinal Bourbon asked me and many others to share his sad tale of the plight of local musicians who are being pushed out of the market by big corporate, deep pocketed dealers. Here are his words along with some helpful links so you can support your local music scene!

It’s sad when local municipalities with a few “movers and shakers” take the quaint feeling of home – the things that made you fall in love with it in the first place, and replace it with mainstream, cookie cutter beliefs; bigger is better, get the franchises here – eliminate individuality and become – just another “place” – and not home. Put codes in place to make all the buildings look the same. Get “box” stores and franchises to raise the tax rate. And once a few of the “elite” get into positions of authority and influence, it’s amazing how fast a zone ordinance or a law can get changed. It’s not what you know – it’s who you know. I’ve lived here in Justin for 14 years. The changes in the last four alone have made me….well let’s just say I’m looking forward to retirement and getting myself someplace away from HOA’s and “Economic Development Committees.” There was time when we had local artists who painted murals on buildings, and festivals where local artists could show their wares. We had a quaint local newspaper, and the pharmacist knew me and my wife by name. Yup – bigger and better, you’ll see.

In the meantime, struggling local artists and musicians are still trying to get out there – for the sheer love of performing, not the $$$. I’ll share a couple of links – starting with this one. And if you still want to see artists and musicians pour themselves into the love of their craft and proudly represent where they came from, please check some out. I promise , they won’t be pandering for their next album or selling t-shirts and souvenirs – though they will pass a tip jar. Picks, guitar strings and drumsticks cost money, and many of us have day jobs with no roadies to carry our equipment. Peace.
